Opencast coal mining in Kuzbass began in 1947 in "Krasnobrodsky" open-pit mine. In 1949, "Bachatsky" open-pit mine was put into operation, and later other open-pit coal mining enterprises were built. On 19 May 1964, by a special order of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR, a specialized combine "Kuzbasskarierugol" was created. It united all open-pit coal mining enterprises in the Kuznetsk Basin - at that time there were 13 of them. The total number of employees amounted to 14,000 people. In the year of the establishment of the combine, its miners produced almost 19 million tons of coal. Lev Moiseevich Reznikov was appointed head of "Kuzbasskarierugol". The further successful development of open-pit coal mining in Kuzbass is associated with his name. Ten years later, the combine, which had been renamed as "Kemerovougol", already operated 49 enterprises, including 17 open-pit mines, and employed more than 36,000 people. It became one of the country's industry giants.

In the 1990s, "Kemerovougol" combine was renamed as "Kuzbassrazrezugol". In 2006, "Kuzbassrazrezugol" Coal Company came under the control of the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company (UMMC). Since that time, the coal combine moved to a new stage of development: production tactics and strategy were changed, and large investments were attracted. "Kuzbassrazrezugol" has become a leader in the coal market in terms of technical modernization and introduction of new mining equipment.

In terms of production volumes, "Kuzbassrazrezugol" Coal Company ranks:

• 1st in Kuzbass (~ 20% of total coal production);
• 2nd in Russia (~ 11% of total coal production).

The high quality of coal allows the company to provide stable supplies of coal to partners in Russia and abroad. Its average annual coal production varies fr om 40 to 45 million tons. 70% of mined coal is exported. The current development strategy of "Kuzbassrazrezugol" is aimed at further improvement of the quality and competitiveness of its products. The technical park of the company is represented by modern specialized equipment for extraction and transportation of coal. Today, the company's enterprises use 1,600 pieces of equipment, including 250 Russian and imported excavators. Among other things, technical re-equipment allows for constant improvement of product quality, industrial safety and working conditions. The integrated management system introduced in the Company in 2010, confirmed by international certificates - ISO 9001: 2015 (quality management system), ISO 14001: 2015 (environmental management system), ISO 45001: 2018 (occupational safety and health management system ) and ISO 50001: 2011 (energy management system), pursues the similar aims.

Ensuring safe and accident-free production is the most important priority of "Kuzbassrazrezugol" Coal Company. This work is ongoing and systematic. The activities are implemented within the framework of long-term Industrial safety Programs. The Company allocates over 300 million rubles for these purposes annually.

Destruction of the natural landscape is inevitable in mining. Therefore, one of the company's fundamental principles is to organize production with minimal damage to the environment and restore the ecological balance in the territory wh ere it operated.
